Summary: Recommended (Update, 2016)

The Britax Hi-Liner booster hasn’t changed in many years and is a very wide booster seat, with the addition of the anti-submarining clip. Britax have since released the Kid Guard โ€” a booster without armrests, allowing easier access to the seat belt buckle.

When budget constraints mean a fully harnessed Type G seat isn’t possible, the cost-effective Hi-Liner may be the right solution.

Infa Secure has a dedicated booster, the Vario, offering more protection via Air Cocoon Technology โ€” but its headrest is harder to adjust, and it doesn’t have an anti-submarining clip at all.

โœ… Pros

  • โ€ข Headrest holds your child’s head upright when they fall asleep
  • โ€ข Easy to use with the car’s seat belt
  • โ€ข Doesn’t take up too much room in a small car โ€” in some cars, allows 3 across
  • โ€ข Anti-submarining clip is a genuine safety bonus
  • โ€ข Britax was first to introduce an anti-submarining clip to prevent a child sliding under the lap section of the seat belt โ€” though it must be set correctly for your child

โœ• Cons

  • โ€ข Padding on the bottom of the seat is a little thin
  • โ€ข The anti-submarining clip (SLIDEGUARD) ships at maximum length โ€” if a parent doesn’t adjust it for their child, the lap belt can sit higher under their ribs
  • โ€ข Safety relies on the parent actively using and adjusting the clip โ€” unlike competitors that build anti-submarining protection directly into a lower, bucket-style seat back

๐Ÿ“‹

Overall: great if you have limited back seat space โ€” it looks good and is versatile for a growing child. Just remember the anti-submarining protection depends entirely on parents correctly threading the lap belt through the clip every time.

๐Ÿ“‹ Hi-Liner booster seat description

The Hi-Liner SG booster from Safe n Sound includes:

โ€ขExclusive Safe-n-Sound SLIDEGUARD Clip
โ€ขArmrests and retractable cup holders
โ€ขDeep side wings to contain your child’s head and body
โ€ขOne-hand adjustable headrest

Deep side wings contain your child’s head and body, shielding them from impacting the vehicle door in a crash. The EPS foam liner provides additional protection, absorbing energy to protect your child’s head.

The one-hand adjustable headrest changes height simply, to comfortably fit your growing child.

Red colour-coded seat belt guides indicate the correct belt path and positioning for ease of use.

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ SLIDEGUARD Clip

The SLIDEGUARD Clip is a genuinely life-saving device โ€” it stops your child sliding under the lap belt (submarining) during impact, minimising the risk of abdominal injury.

The Hi-Liner SG is the first expandable booster seat designed with slots in the seat cover and shell, compatible with the Safe-n-Sound Protecta Harness(now a discontinued product line)

โ“ Frequently asked questions

Is the Britax Hi-Liner recommended?
๏ผ‹
Yes โ€” as of a 2016 update, it’s recommended, especially as a cost-effective option when a fully harnessed Type G seat isn’t within budget. Just remember its anti-submarining protection depends on the parent correctly adjusting the clip.
What is the SLIDEGUARD clip and why does it matter?
๏ผ‹
It’s Safe n Sound’s anti-submarining device, stopping a child sliding under the lap belt during impact. It ships at maximum length, so it must be manually adjusted to fit your child correctly โ€” if left too long, the lap belt can sit higher under their ribs.
What are the downsides of the Hi-Liner?
๏ผ‹
Thin bottom padding, and anti-submarining protection that relies entirely on the parent adjusting and using the SLIDEGUARD clip correctly โ€” unlike seats with anti-submarining built into a lower, bucket-style seat back.
How does it compare to the Infa Secure Vario?
๏ผ‹
The Vario offers more protection via Air Cocoon Technology, but its headrest is harder to adjust and it doesn’t have an anti-submarining clip at all โ€” so it’s a genuine trade-off, not a straightforward upgrade.
Is the Hi-Liner good for fitting three across?
๏ผ‹
It’s reasonably compact and doesn’t take up too much room โ€” in some cars, it does allow fitting three seats across the back row.
Should I upgrade to the Infa Emerge instead?
๏ผ‹
Our sources disagree on this one โ€” this page suggests it as an upgrade if budget allows, but our separate Infa Secure Emerge review says it’s not recommended due to harness issues. Worth speaking with a fitter directly before deciding, rather than relying on either page alone.
